The capital and largest city of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany and a major Rhine River port, 43 km northeast of Frankfurt and 97 km southeast of Koblenz.

Founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC as a military fortress and provincial capital of Germania Superior, the city and its museums displays interesting remains of that period.
The city is considered a wine capital, being the transport hub of the Rhine’s wine production, and the southeastern corner of the Romantic Rhine with its hilltop castles, picturesque small towns and vineyards covered rolling hills.

Mainz is famous for being the birthplace, and home to Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the movable-type printing press, who printed the first books ever in the 15th century including the Gutenberg Bible on display in the Gutenberg Museum in the city.

  • Stroll the small old town with its cobbled streets and nice squares, visit Market Square and its vibrant open-air market
  • The 10th century Mainz Romanesque Cathedral of St. Martin with its rich treasury of religious artifacts, and the 16th century Marktbrunnen Renaissance Fountain.
  • Enjoy the nearby Kirschgarten, the small 14th century square, enclosed by tall partially timbered 16th -18th centuries houses, and the Schillerplatz which was a public plaza in Mainz’s Roman era and today presents impressive Baroque and Rococo buildings. Also in the square the 9 meters high Mainzer Fastnachtsbrunnen monument decorated with more than 200 bronze figures of local dignitaries.
  • Visit the 10th century church of Stephanskirche, on a nearby hill, where you will admire the beautiful Blue toned windows in the choir designed by the famous Marc Chagall.
  • On Rheinstraße explore the 13th century gatehouses and Holzturm and Eisenturm watchtowers part of Mainz’s old defensive wall.
  • There are quite a few interesting museums in Mainz, including the Gutenberg Museum, and the Landesmuseum Mainz museum of archaeology, art and culture, home to a collection of art from prehistory through to Gothic and Renaissance, and a collection of Baroque furniture.
    In the Rhine Museum of Ancient Seafaring explore the well preserved remains of 4th century five Roman war ships found in the Rhine River.
  • Mainz is home to Mainzer Fassenacht carnival, which its season starts on November and continues until February-March. On Rosenmontag, “Rose Monday”, the peak of the Carnival takes place with a large parade and more than 500,000 people celebrating in the streets of the old town.

Access Mainz by car via the A60 and the B9 roads, by train using the Mainz – Cologne line, or by boat cruise on the Rhine using the KD ferry service.
In addition to Mainz Airport, the Frankfurt–Hahn Airport (HHN) is 90 km west of the city and the main Frankfurt Airport is 30 km east of the city.

Spend ½-1 day in Mainz and consider taking a 2-3 day trips of the Romantic Rhine, and a Vineyard Tour in one of the vineyards around Mainz and along the Rhine River.
