• Mai Khao Beach

Mai Khao Beach is 11 km long on the northwestern coast, 35 km north of Phuket Town. The beach is part of Sirinat National Park, a protected area that has prevented the resort development observed in other beaches. This is a secluded and tranquil beach, with only few luxury resorts occupying the large area. The beach water is rougher and the currents stronger than in the more sheltered southern beaches. The beach slopes steeply in some places creating difficult conditions for children and weak swimmers. Note that Phuket International Airport is adjacent to Mai Khao’s northern section, creating continuing noise which is significantly reduced in the southern section.
The beach serves as a nesting site for green and leatherback sea turtles laying their eggs in the sand in November through to February.
Reaching the beach is difficult. Mai Khao works best for those renting cars or staying in one of the resorts. The beach appeals to those who prioritize natural beauty, empty beaches, and avoiding the crowds, over convenience, dining options, and nightlife.
