• Mae Hong Son Loop Route

Mae Hong Son is Thailand’s most remote and mountainous province, a region of forested peaks, mist-filled valleys, Shan and Karen hill tribe villages, and isolation that has kept the region culturally distinct from central Thailand. The province capital, Mae Hong Son, 170 km east of Chiang Mai, is in a valley near the Myanmar border. The regions isolation, the town’s Shan Burmese population and its cultural influence, and the magnificent mountainous scenery, creates a remarkably different atmosphere than the one found in the rest of northern Thailand.
The 500 km road trip of 4-5 days through remote mountains, between Chiang Mai through Pai to Mae Hong Son, and back through Mae Sariang to Chiang Mai, is highly recommended, presenting tranquil traditional Thailand in a beautiful natural setting.
Enjoy river valleys, hill tribe villages, hot springs, caves, and panoramic viewpoints, with sometimes challenging driving conditions.
In the town of Mae Hong Son enjoy the beautiful setting, the tranquility, the Burmese influenced temples, and the authentic morning market.
Along the road trip, and in addition to the marvelous scenery, visit the following destinations:

  • Pai and its surrounding attractions
  • Sop Pong, the small town west of Pai and the massive and magnificent Lod Cave system.
  • Mae Aw and Ban Rak Thai, the Chinese Yunnanese villages with their tea plantations and Chinese culture, on Myanmar border.
  • Mae Sariang, a riverside town with Burmese-style temples.
  • The Ob Luang National Park Canyon offering swimming, hot springs, and camping. And more.

The best time to follow the Mae Hong Son Loop Route is in the months of November-February when the temperatures are cool and the skies are clear.
