  • Madeira has a beautiful network of dozens of Trails of all levels and length, from the coastal trails through to subtropical forests trails to viewpoints and mountain tops.

  • Unique in Madeira are the ‘Levadas’, trails that run parallel to water collection open air tunnels that leads water for irrigation from the northern mountains to the lower southern grounds.
    Selected popular trails are presented in the destinations and attractions descriptions. Access to the trails is subjected to a low fee, applied to nonresidence from the age of 12 years.
  • There are several marked trails, ‘Levadas’ and dirt roads, for mountain biking within the protected forest areas.
    There are few places offering bikes for rent and operators to assist you with organizing a great experience.
  • The island’s rugged terrain and dense forests combined with the water streams that cross the mountains are perfect for Canyoning.
    The increasingly popular activity involves swimming, climbing and more, and is relevant all year round, in summer on the north side mountains and on the southern mountains in winter.
  • The Madeira rugged cliffs with basalt rock walls dropping to the ocean, or in the mountain areas, offers great opportunity for Rock Climbing for both beginners and experienced climbers.

  • Paragliding is available from sites such as Pico da Cruz west of Funchal, the Madalena do Mar Viewpoint and Prazeres on the southwestern coast, and Porto da Cruz on Madeira eastern region.
