The charming Medieval Mountain top village in the Alpilles mountains, 32 km South of Avignon, is highly popular and considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. The village is famous for its 11th century Coteaux-des-Baux fortress overlooking the village. Enjoy the scenic mountain road leading to the village offering beautiful landscapes of the Rocky Mountains, the plains, and the Mediterranean in the distance. Stroll the village narrow alleys and admire the 16th century townhouses, the partially preserved village walls, and the 19th century Porte Mage and Porte d’Eyguieres gates. Window shop the small local shops and enjoy the Coteaux-des-baux-en-provence red and rose wines. Visit the 12th century Saint Vincent and the Penitents Blancs chapel, and the Musee des Santons, home to a collection of 17th and 18th century Naples’ figurines. Continue to the Hotel de Porcelet with its beautiful windows, 17th century frescoes and the Yves Brayer Museum. in the Hotel Brion home to the Foundation Louis Jou and explore its collection of Medieval books and engravings including those of Durer and Goya. Climb the old stairs to the large and impressive fortress of Chateau des Baux, a highly popular destination in the village and stroll its grounds. Explore the ruins of the walls and towers, the small 12th century chapel, the houses carved into the rock, and the Dovecoat with its 2,000 Pigeon nesting holes.
During April through to September live demonstrations of full-size replicas of Siege Weapons with knights in armor are held in the fortress grounds. The demonstrations includ the biggest Trebuchet (Catapult) in Europe, a Battering Ram, and a Ballista. Close to the village, North of the road to Maillane, visit the highly recommended Carrieres de Lumiere, the Cathedrale d’Images, an ancient quarry in which beautiful artworks are projected on its walls with surrounding music. It’s a fabulous spectacle of light and sound.
