• Kritsa

A large and picturesque hillside village 10 km southwest of Agios Nikolaos, surrounded by olive groves with whitewashed houses built into a rocky hill. Stroll the town lively winding narrow alleys and enjoy cafes, restaurants, and small shops offering handmade local products. The site of ancient Dorian Lato of the 12th century BC, which was destroyed in 200 BC, is 3 km north of Kritsa.
One km from the city entrance visit the 13th century Byzantine Church of Panagia Kera and explore its magnificent and rich Byzantine frescoes of the 13th-14th centuries, considered some of Crete’s best.  Note especially the frescoes of Saint Francis of Assisi in the central aisle, and the scenes from the occult gospels on the aisle of Agia Anna.
