• Khao San Road and Banglamphu

Khao San Road, a legendary backpacker hub, and its surrounding Banglamphu neighborhood, offer the cheapest accommodation in central Bangkok and a dense concentration of travel agencies. Along the road, bars, restaurants, street food stalls, and a perpetual carnival atmosphere from morning to well past midnight. The surrounding Banglamphu Market neighborhood with its network of lanes north of Khao San Road is far more authentic, with local clothing stalls, fresh food markets, and neighborhood temples that serve the local community rather than visitors.
Phra Athit Road, running along the river at the edge of Banglamphu, is one of Bangkok’s most charming streets, lined with cafés, small live music venues, and riverside bars popular upon Thai university students and creative types. An evening stroll along Phra Athit followed by dinner at one of its restaurants is a lovely alternative to the Khao San Road, offering a more local atmosphere.
