Located within the town of Kaymakli, 25 km south of Goreme near Derinkuyu underground city, it is also a highly popular attraction. The city was probably built in the 7th-8th centuries, and was also used by early Christians and Turkish villagers in the 13th century, and during the First World War in the early 20th century. Kaymakli has similar structure, facilities and features to those in Derinkuyu underground city, and both cities are connected by very long tunnels.
