• Jeronimos Monastery

The Mosteiro dos Jeronimos in the Belem District is a 16th century Gothic Manueline style monastery, one of Lisbon’s icons. The monastery was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama, the discoverer who found the marine route from Europe to India at the end of the 15th century. The monastery’s unique and magnificent architecture is extravagantly decorated with stone carvings, various marine end eastern design motives and sculptures, in addition to beautiful courtyards to enjoy and admire.
the Chapel of St. Jerome part of the monastery is home to the tombs of Vasco da Gama, as well as other notable people and Portuguese royalties.
The monastery’s western wing is home to a Maritime Museum presenting the Age of Discovery and Portugal’s nautical history. The museum collections include nautical maps, ancient globes, ship models, and much more.
The National Archaeological Museum located in the former dormitory of the Jeronimos Monastery, is home to a large collection of archaeological items found in Portugal, dated to the Palaeolithic, Celtic, Roman and Medieval periods, including sculptures, jewellery, mosaics, and more.
