A picturesque Medieval market town in the southern part of the North York Moors National Park, 38 km north of York, and 21 km northwest of Castle Howard. The town is associated with the Earls of Feversham whose home in Duncombe Park was built overlooking Helmsley Castle. Other interesting places to visit are the striking Rievaulx Abbey ruins, 5 km west of Helmsley, the International Centre for Birds of Prey at Duncombe Park, and the beautiful 18th century Walled Garden behind the castle.
