• Heimaey Island

The largest and the only inhabited of the Westman Islands is accessed by a ferry from Landeyjahofn harbor south of Seljalandsfoss Fall on road 254.
The Island is home to 4,500 people most living from fishing, and millions of puffins and other birds that are migrating to the island in the summer for breeding. The island is famous for the Eldfell Volcano eruption of 1973 that left dramatic landscapes on the island and the archipelago. Visit the Eldheimar Eruption Museum, hike for 2 hours to the 220 meters high Eldfell Volcano to enjoy the beautiful island landscapes, and take a popular walk to the Mars like landscape, the Eldfellshraun, the result of the Eldfell Volcano eruption.
The island has a very large Puffin’s colony to be enjoyed especially in the months of August and September along the island’s coast.
Take a boat trip from Vestmannaeyjar Harbor, the only town on the island, to watch Orcas and Fin Whales, Beluga Whales in their natural habitat, and the impressive Elephant Rock from the sea. If you happen to be in the island in the weekend before the first Monday of August you will enjoy the annual National Festival first held in 1874 to commemorate 1,000 years of the Iceland’ settlement. Spend few hours to a day on the island with your car or bicycles and return by a ferry to continue your trip.
