• Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Park and Water Garden

The Fountain Abbey in the Studley Royal Park is one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England, 5 km southwest of Ripon and 46 km northwest of York. The 12th century abbey was dissolved in the 16th century. The abbey area covers 280,000 sqm and it was surrounded by high wall built in the 13th century, parts of which are still visible south and west of the abbey.
The church and claustral buildings stand at the center of the area, and the Porter’s Lodge, which was once the gatehouse to the abbey, is home to a modern exhibition area with displays describing the history of the Abbey and the day to day life of the monks living on site.
