Faro is a typical Portuguese city and the capital of Algarve, in the southeastern part of the region. Faro is not a highly popular tourist’s destination due to the relatively distant beaches and the lack of a resort town vibes. The city is the gateway to the Algarve Region with its international airport catering the Algarve international visitors that are then scattered to the more popular beach and vacation resorts.

  1. the Largo da Se Plaza home to the Gothic cathedral which offers beautiful scenery from its tower.
  2. The Paco Episcopal bishop’s palace, and the beautiful Baroque Arco da Vila portal.
  3. Visit the impressive Baroque church of Igreja do Carmo with its gilded carved altarpieces, and the Capela dos Ossos, where the bones of 1,200 monks are on display.
  4. Visit Faro Marina with its mix of fishing boats and modern yachts.
  5. Enjoy the Rua de Santo Antonio shopping street, the Forum Algarve Mall, the restaurants and bars, and the vibrant nightlife geared especially for Faro’s locals.
  6. On the other side of Ria Formosa are three islands home to Faro’s beaches of which Praia de Faro, in the island of Faro, with its 5 km sandy beach stretch, is the most recommended. The beach which is accessed by a bus from the city center has cafes, bars, and the required beach facilities.

South of Faro you will find the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, a series of saltwater lagoons and waterways, rich with migratory birds and marine life.

Explore by a boat cruise or a kayak the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa and nearby fishing villages or take a boat cruise for Dolphins watching.
The N2 scenic road that starts at Faro and heads north all the way to northern Portugal. The road is popular for bike and cars road trips.

Faro airport, 7 km southwest of the city, is the main international airport of the Algarve Region and southern Portugal, but to reach other destinations in the region use the bus and train stations are in Faro’s centre.
When vacationing in one of the western beach resorts or in Tavira to the east, consider taking a day trip to Faro spending a day in the old quarter and exploring the  Parque Natural da Ria Formosa.
