Ephesus is an ancient Greek city built in the 10th century BC and flourished under Rome in the 2nd century BC. The site is one of the largest archaeological sites in the world, and it is a highly popular tourist attraction.

Ephesus most famous ruins are the 550 BC Temple of Artemis which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Only few remains of the glorious building are still standing including the 125 AD Library of Celsus façade which has been carefully reconstructed from original fragments, and the 25,000 seats amphitheatre believed to be the largest in the ancient world.

Also impressive are the Gate of Augustus, various temples and tombs, public buildings, and many more architectural remains.
The city had one of the seven churches of Asia cited in the Book of Revelation, and the Gospel of John may have been written here.
