• Eltz Castle

The best preserved Medieval castle in the region is positioned on a large rock 70 meters high, in a valley within the hills above the Moselle River, near Wierschem, 36 km southwest of Koblenz. The 12th century castle was never destroyed nor abandoned and is owned by the Eltz family for 33 generations. The fascinating tour of the castle takes you back through 12th century architecture, original period furnishings, gold, silver and porcelain artifacts, weapons, and 14th – 17th centuries firearms and armor.
Explore the 14th century living rooms, the paintings, the Rübenach Upper Hall with its murals, garments, and the Gothic chapel with its colorful windows. Admire the Hunting Room with its hunting trophies, the hunting weapons, the 15th century Kitchen and much more. Be sure to visit the Eltz Castle Armory and Treasury, home to one of the most important private collections, covering 8 centuries and including more than 500 items of gold and silver artworks, precious glass, and porcelain, extravagant jewelry, and more. The castle is surrounded by a nature reserve with numerous beautiful hiking trails including the award winning “Eltz Castle Panorama” trail. Access Eltz Castle by car or bus from Münstermaifeld and Wierschem or take the train from Cochem to Moselkern and walk through the forest to get to the castle.
