The sanctuary of Delphi which was regarded as the center of the world and the most famous oracle of ancient Greece, was the seating place of Pythia the major oracle who had direct communication line to the gods, and was consulted with regarding to important decisions to be made throughout the ancient classical world.

The Delphi sanctuary is located on the southwestern slope of Mount Parnassus, above the Gulf of Corinth, east of the small town of Delphi, 160 km northwest of Athens.
Today the site is a popular tourists destination offering in addition to the archeological marvels, magnificent scenery of the mountain, valley and the gulf.

The Oracle and Delphi were at their peak between the 4th and the 6th centuries BC the period of the current ruins.
The Delphi archeological site includes;

  • The Sanctuary of Apollo
  • The nearby Sanctuary of Athena Pronea
  • The Delphi Archaeological Museum.

Visitors first encounter the Sanctuary of Athena Pronea, known as home of the Tholos, a circular structure of unknown purpose with 3 of the 20 columns that stood on its podium re erected. West to the Tholos are the foundations of the Temple of Athena Pronea.

The central most important part of Delphi was the sanctuary of Apollo with the “Sacred Way” leading to the Temple. Along the Sacred Way there are numerous ritual monuments and statues dedicated by Greek cities to express the gratitude to the god and his oracle.
The impressive 5th century BC Athenian Treasury is the only one almost completely reconstructed.

Visit also the recently restored 4th century BC, 4,500 spectators Amphitheater further up the hill, offering spectacular view of the entire sanctuary and the valley below.

The Delphi Archaeological Museum at the foot of the archaeological site is home to architectural objects and artifacts excavated in ancient Delphi. Among the displays are the earliest known notation of a melody, the athletic statues of the Charioteer of Delphi, the Kleobis and Biton brothers’ golden treasures discovered beneath the Sacred Way, and more.
