The market operates along a network of narrow canals lined with wooden shophouses and vendors selling tropical fruits, vegetables, Thai snacks, pad thai, coconut pancakes, and souvenirs from flat-bottomed wooden boats. The scene is undeniably theatrical and heavily oriented toward tourism, but still spectacular. The narrow canals, the press of colorful boats, the vendors in traditional dress, and the backdrop of canal-side wooden houses create a beautiful visual experience. Arrive very early, to experience the market at its most active before the large tour groups arrive. A short long-tail boat ride, through the surrounding canal network is a good way to see the market from the water and explore the quieter residential canals beyond the main tourist area.
