Once a fishing village, Carvoeiro is a highly popular picturesque resort village which is very crowded in the summer season, and somewhat peaceful in the winter. The village offers a relaxing and more peaceful atmosphere when compared to the larger resort towns of Lagos, Portimao and Albufeira, and its location between these resorts enables the vacationers to benefit from the attractions they have to offer. The village is highly recommended for families for a summer vacation, and for couples and older visitors in the low season. Surrounded by magnificent scenery, beautiful beaches and high cliffs, the village has a lot to offer for a great summer vacation.
The region, as fully described by TheTjoy.com, is blessed with some of the best beaches in the Algarve with magnificent settings, calm and clear waters best for families, and some great for snorkelling.
- Carvoeiro has one beach, Praia de Carvoeiro, within a walking distance from the town center. The sandy beach surrounded by steep cliffs is very beautiful, has all the facilities, cafes, and restaurants, but it’s small with limited parking, and is highly crowded in summer.
- Praia do Paradise is a very small beach 500 meters west of Carvoeiro, great for snorkelling but not very convenient.
- As an alternative to the over crowded Praia de Carvoeiro, visitors may choose the magnificent, sheltered with dramatic cliffs, Praia do Vale de Centeanes, 2 km and 20 minutes walk east of town.
- Near the fishing village of Ferragudo, 6-7 km to the west, few beaches including the tranquil Praia dos Caneiros with its beautiful cliffs and high waves, the large great for children Praia do Pintadinho, Praia do Molhe, and the large, great for families Praia Grande, among others.
- There are numerous beautiful beaches, 1.5-7 km to the East, including the small and secluded Praia de Vale Covo, Praia do Vale de Centeanes, Praia do Vale Espinhaço, and the small popular for snorkelling Praia do Carvalho.
- Further away east enjoy the large Praia Benagil with the famous Benagil Cave, and Praia da Marinha considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, with its rock pools, double Rock Arch, and abundance of marine life.
