• Carmo Convent

Carmo Convento in Chiado district is the impressive ruins of a 14th century Gothic convent with only the arches and pillars of its nave are left to explore. The convent which was destroyed by the infamous earthquake and fire of 1755 is home to the small Carmo Archaeological Museum and its collection of artifacts from the pre-historic period through to the Middle Ages. The eclectic collection includes among others a chapel decorated with decorative tiles, prehistoric tools, Moorish decorations, pre-Columbian pottery, and South American mummies. The Santa Justa Elevator can be accessed from the site.
