A town in Nevşehir Province, Cappadocia, 8 km north of Goreme, known for being a center of Red Clay Pottery, and for its beautiful cobbled old town overlooking the Kisilirmak river the source of the Red Clay. In town, an interesting 5,000 BC 3 floors and 5 km long underground complex called Gir-Gor, including homes, tunnels, and religious sites.

Visit the Güray Museum, an underground cave museum home to antiques, ceramics, and pottery.

While in Avanos, you can visit Zelve (5 km to the south), with its fairy chimneys landscapes, the rock houses, caves, and rock churches, and Cavusin village, 4 km south of Avanos, with its rock castle and Cavusin church.

Visit the vast multi floor underground city of Ozkonak 15 km north of Avanos, which was home to up to 60,000 people.
Unlike the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, Ozkonak had very long and narrow holes between the floors, used for communication and ventilation when the city was sealed against invasion.
Visit Saruhan Kervansaray 6 km east of Avanos, the restorated historical road Inn built with local colored stones in the 13th century by the Anatolian Seljuks, on the Silk Road leading from China to Turkey and Europe. The impressive complex which is now used for cultural and art events, consists of Summer and winter sections, with a large courtyard, a portico with a fountain, a domed mosque, panoramic terrace, and more.

Another Seljuk Road Inn presenting magnificent architecture, with similar features as the Saruhan Kervansaray, is the Agzıkarahan Kervansaray in the Ağzıkarahan village, near Aksaray, north of Selime and Ihlara valley.
