• Angelokastro Fortress

A 13th century impressive Byzantine fortress which played a major role in defending the island against pirates and the Ottomans. The fortress stands on a steep cliff above the northwestern coast, near the village of Palaiokastritsa, 31 km northwest of the town of Corfu.  The castle is mostly in ruins with some features still visible.
Explore the Archangel Michael church at the southern side, the circular tower protecting the main gate, the Anthropomorphic graves carved into the rock on the western side, and the small chapel of Aghia Kyriaki carved into the rock with its 18th century paintings.
Two more fortresses mostly in ruins, Gardiki Fortress in the southwest and Kassiopi fortress on the northeast, have formed together with the Angelokastro Fortress a triangle of defense from pirates and the Ottomans trying to invade the island.
