The 13th century (“Red”) palaces complex, are a Moorish walled fortress, palaces and gardens built on a hill overlooking Granada. This highly popular site, one of the most visited sites in Spain, symbolizes the power of the Nasrid Moorish dynasty, being the residence of the Nasrid sultans and the members of their court.
The palaces complex includes the Nasrid Sultan’ Palaces and the Palace of the Lions with its famous Court of the lions and its 124 marble columns. Also part of the complex, the 11th century Alcazaba military fortress which offers overwhelming landscape of the city. The Moorish decorations within the complex includes Marble columns and floors, fine Wood crafted ceilings, walls covered with beautiful calligraphies and archways covered with geometric figures.
Also within the complex are the 16th century Renaissance style Palace of Charles V, and the Parador de Granada within the Alhambra gardens, originally the Monastery of San Francisco where the Catholic kings were buried.
On a hill adjacent to the Alhambra complex visit the Generalife, the 13th century Moorish-Nasrid style sultans’ summer palace and gardens. The palace beautiful and tranquil Gardens, present beautifully designed patterns of flowers, plants, trees, pools, and fountains, to be visited day or night.
Spend at least half a day to visit the famous sites in the Palace complex and be sure to book your tickets well in advance (weeks/months) to ensure your entrance or tour of the palaces.
