• The Calanques National Park

A magnificent park 20 km long and 4 km wide along the Mediterranean coast, in Marseille Bay between Marseille and Cassis in Provence. In the park numerous magnificent narrow sea water fjords with steep limestone cliffs walls which are highly popular for both scenic boat tours, a relaxing day in a beautiful secluded cove, and for outdoor activities.
Other ways to enjoy the beautiful Calanques is by hiking or cycling the various trails along the ridge while enjoying the overwhelming scenery, or by rock climbing the high cliffs. Some of the Calanques areas are accessible and some are not, consult with the tourists Information Centers in both Marseille and Cassis, for the accessible areas and the available hiking and cycling trails, boat and kayak tours, and for the best viewpoints along the park.
Boat tours are available from either Marseille, Cassis or La Ciotat ports.
In the Calanque de Morgiou near Cap Morgiou, Marseille, you will find the Cosquer Cave (‘La Grotte Cosquer’), an underwater cave 37 meters deep accessible by diving through a 175 meters tunnel. The cave which was inhabited during the Paleolithic era when the sea level was much lower, about 20,000BC, is covered with land and sea animals wall paintings and engravings.
While in the park enjoy the small beaches of Port Miou, the popular Port Pin, and the overwhelming beach and surroundings of Calanque d’En Vau, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
The best time to visit the Calanques is in the months of March through to June, when the temperatures are cool and rain is rare.
