• The Palais Longchamp

The palace is home to the Water Castle (the Chateau d’eau), the Museum of Fine Arts (Musee des beaux-arts), the Museum of Natural History (Musee d’histoire naturelle de Marseille), and the magnificent Longchamp Park and Garden. The palace is one of Marseille’s most popular attractions, built in the 19th century to commemorate the construction of the city’s water canal. The palace’s Museum of Fine Arts is home to 16th -19th centuries collections of paintings and drawings, by French Provençal, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch artists, including the famous Rodin’s La Meditation sculpture.
The palace’s Museum of Natural History includes several collections from the 18th century to these days. In the palace’s park visit the Observatory of Palais Longchamp, including a planetarium, astronomy exhibitions, and the big observatory telescope which its images can be explored. Surrounding the palace are magnificent 19th century parks and gardens home to numerous sculptures and water features, waterfall and ponds, and various animal sculptures. Behind the Palace, beautiful French and English landscape gardens, with green loans, playgrounds and picnic spots. In early July the park is home to the famous Marseille Jazz Festival.
