• The Church of San Giovanni alle catacombe

The remains of a 6th century church once the ancient Cathedral of Syracuse. The church has suffered several earthquakes, but it’s remains are impressive including the San Marciano’s Crypt and the San Giovanni’s Catacombs.
Entering through the church floor, the 4th to 6th centuries active Catacombs are arranged in an underground array of tunnels with burial chambers carved into the limestone rocks. Special attractions are the sacred crypt of San Marciano, the first bishop of Syracuse, and the Sarcophagus of Adelfia with rich decorations of biblical scenes.
