• Mount Vesuvius

An active volcano 9 km east of Naples, which erupted in AD 79 destroying the perfectly preserved Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other Roman towns.

Vesuvius has erupted many times since and is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years.

Mount Vesuvius is open to visitors, and the crater can be reached by car or a public bus (from Pompeii and Herculaneum) to within 200 meters from the summit. From the summit continue by following a network of trails to and around the volcano crater.

One trail is an easy 4 km round trip, reaching 1,170 meters above sea level, offering great scenery of Vesuvius Park, the Bay of Naples, and the Campanian Plain.
