• Herculaneum

14 km southeast of Naples, the small town suffered the same fate as Pompeii, and was buried under Mount Vesuvius’s volcanic ashes and mud in 79 AD. Herculaneum, a wealthy Roman town, is better preserved than Pompeii and its ruins and remains are extremely impressive and sometimes shocking.
The town’s beautiful buildings, private houses, public baths, taverns, temples, and artworks are all undamaged. Enjoy the sculptures, magnificent frescoes, and mosaics. The most famous of the luxurious villas at Herculaneum is the “Villa of the Papyri”, a seafront retreat of Julius Caesar’s father-in-law, which stretched down towards the sea in four terraces.
Reach Herculaneum from Naples. From Rome take a guided tour, go by car (2.5 hours), or use the train to Naples (2-2.5 hours), and a local train to the nearby Ercolano.
