• Castel Nuovo in Naples

Naples the “city of the seven castles” had seven castles within its boundaries: Castel dell’Ovo, Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino), Castel Sant’Elmo, Castel Capuano, Castello del Carmine, Castello di Nisida and Forte di Vigliena, all providing powerful defense from naval attacks. Castel Nuovo is the most impressive and interesting casle to visit. Overlooking Piazza Municipio, the castle was built originally in the 13th century, has trapezoidal layout with four piperno stone covered towers, one tuff tower, and a surrounding moat.
Also in the castle a 15th century, 35 meters tall, white marble Triumphal Arch. Explore the Hall of the Barons, the Armory Hall, and the Palatine chapel with its walls covered with frescoes by various artists including Giotto, and Neapolitan Renaissance sculptures. Visit the Library of the Neapolitan Society of Homeland History, and the City Museum, home to a collection of 15th to 18th centuries frescoes and paintings of religious themes, Neapolitan Baroque paintings, and other paintings dated to the 18th through to the 20th centuries.
