• Montecarlo

A charming small hilltop town in the hills of the Lucca region, 18 km east of Lucca. Surrounded by vineyards, the town is part of the Wine and Olive oil Route (Strada del Vino e dell’Olio) leading west to Lucca and Versilia near the ocean. The town has a beautiful and well preserved historic center surrounded by impressive walls. The town symbol is the 14th century Rocca del Cerruglio fortress overlooking the town with semicircular main tower connected through the fortress walls to two square shaped smaller towers. Also in town the Church of Saint Andrew (Chiesa Collegiata di Sant’Andrea), and the church Pieve di San Piero in Campo, dated to the 9th century. Be sure to tour a vineyard and tasting its great wine.
Two of the best vineyards in the hills surrounding Montecarlo are Fattoria Il Poggio 30 km east of Lucca, and Buonamico Holding 16 km east of Lucca.
