• San Giovanni in Laterano

St John Lateran in Rome, founded in the 1st century under emperor Constantine the Great, is one of the four Papal churches of Rome and the cathedral of the diocese of Rome. The church was reconstructed in the 17th century, and a new facade was built with 15 statues by Alessandro Galilei in the 18th century. The church contains six papal tombs. In the center of the church a decorated papal altar with relics of Paul and Peter behind golden bars. The church has twelve statues representing the apostles, made by students of Bernini and a Michelangelo designed ceiling frescos executed by Giacomo della Porta.
