The most vibrant and picturesque old quarter of Rome, west of the Tiber River south of the Vatican City. In the old quarter enjoy the charm of the narrow alleys, medieval houses, and numerous eating and hanging spots. Here you will meet the real Italian vibe, with its people, local shops and neighborhood pizzerias and cafes. Visit Piazzi di Santa Maria, the bassilica and fountain, where at night the piazza and surrounding streets are the main entertainment area in Rome.
Explore Villa Farnesina, a 16th century mansion, and a lovely garden, with its wonderful Renaissance decorations and paintings by Raphael, Peruzzi, and others. Climb the Gianicolo hill to enjoy the magnificent landscape of Rome. At the Porta Portese, enjoy Rome’s most popular flea market held around the streets Via Portuense and Via Ippolito Nievo, with stools selling everything from antiques to clothing. There are several gardens and parks in and near the Trastevere quarter, including Villa Doria Pamphili west of Trastevere and the Gianicolo hill, Villa Sciarra with playgrounds for children in the southern part of Trastevere, and the Orto Botanico (Botanical Garden) part of Rome university.
