• Wat Mahathat

Wat Mahathat was one of the most important temples of the Ayutthaya kingdom, the royal temple where the ashes of the early Ayutthaya kings were enshrined. Built in the late 14th century the temple’s central tower was once 40 meters high.
The temple which is the most visited site in Ayutthaya, is famous above all for the Buddha head entwined in the roots of a bodhi tree. It’s a serene, weathered sandstone head that has become one of the most iconic statues in Thailand. The surrounding ruins of Wat Mahathat are extensive including rows of headless Buddha statues, crumbling stupas, and carved sandstone columns creating a landscape of quiet melancholy and great beauty.
