2-3 Days

Chiang Rai was founded in the 13th century to serve as the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom.
Located in a valley along the Mae Kok River and surrounded by mountains and tea plantations, the city enjoys ethnic diversity with significant Shan, Akha, Lisu, and Chinese Yunnanese populations alongside ethnic Thais.
Chiang Rai is quitter and more relaxed than Chiang Mai, 260 km to the southeast. In the city a small center with a traditional Lanna decorated golden clock tower, and cultural atmosphere influenced by its ethnic diversity and its adjacent Myanmar and Laos borders.

Chiang Rai major attractions are its extraordinary contemporary Buddhist art temples, the White Temple, Wat Rong Khun, the Blue Temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten, and the unique Baan Dam Museum home to impressive arts and artifact items. Explore the Night Bazar with its numerous stalls, and take a Mae Kok River Long Boat Tour to enjoy beautiful rural scenery.
Chiang Rai serves as the gateway to the Golden Triangle, the historically notorious border region where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet at the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak Rivers. The region was once the world’s largest opium producing area and now a region of historical tourism, border trade, and scenic beauty.
Visit Chiang Rai for 2-3 days exploring the Unique temples, the Golden Triangle and the nearby nature attractions. The city’s visit can be either part of a 2-3 day trip or more from Chiang Mai, or part of a road trip where Chiang Rai airport will be the exit point from Northern Thailand.
