Koh Tao, Turtle Island, is the smallest of the three main islands in the Gulf of Thailand, known for being a Scuba Diving and Diving Certification paradise with more than 50 dive schools and numerous excellent diving sites.
The island’s diving sites are rich with marine life, at 5-30 meters deep shallow warm water, 10-30 meters visibility, and additional sites only 15-30 minute away by boat.
Open Water certification cost as low as $250-$300 including accommodation, drive the island’s popularity high.
In the island many dive shops, dive cruises boats, dive instructors, and all the other services and infrastructure required.
The island’s excellent offshore snorkeling and freediving opportunities are at Tanote, Ao Leuk, Shark Bay, Koh Nang Yuan, and other beaches. Boat snorkeling tours to nearby islands are also available.
Also available are sea kayaking around the island, small rock-climbing areas with bolted routes, Muay Thai gyms offering training, Yoga studios and short retreats, and some jungle trails connecting beaches and viewpoints.
Koh Tao’s nightlife scene is modest and social based rather an intense party scene such as in Koh Phangan. Beach Bars can be found especially in Sairee Beach and Chalock Bay offering live music and fire shows.
Koh Tao has limited appeal beyond diving, snorkeling, and backpacker social scene. There are no beach resort infrastructure, luxury hotels, shopping malls, and comprehensive tourist facilities. Only budget to mid-range accommodations are available attracting backpackers and young travelers. Older visitors or families often prefer Koh Samui’s comforts on Koh Tao’s.
Traveling around Koh Tao use rented Motorbike or songthaew trucks.
The island offers year-round diving with the best visibility in February-September.
Spend 2-4 days in the island snorkeling and diving in its excellent sites. Note that average diving certification period will be 3-4 days.
