Pico Island’s fertile volcanic soil, the mild climate and the proximity to the sea presents good wine growing conditions.
To overcome the winds and salty water spray a unique method is used in in which volcanic stone walls known as corrals, currais,
are built around the grape plants to shield them from the strong winds and the salty sea water spray.
