• Lagoa das Sete Cidades

The Lagoon of the Seven Cities consists of two small blue and green lakes within a crater of a dormant volcano, located 28 km northwest of Ponta Delgada on the western part of the Sao Miguel Island.
The breathtaking scenery of the lagoons can be best viewed from different viewpoints.

  • Southern Miradouro da Vista do Rei.
  • The eastern Miradouro do Cerrado Das Freiras.
  • The southeastern Miradouro da Boca do Inferno and from the top of the Caldeira do Alferes, by itself a great wonder.
  • You can also view the lagoon from the northern Miradouro das Cumeeiras, but this viewpoint requires a one hour hike on a steep trail.

Time your visit to view the lagoon also at sunset when the sky is painted with warm colors and the scenery is magnificent.
It is highly recommended to spend some time hiking one or more of the numerous trails in the region including those surrounding the lagoon. The PRC 03 Trail for example is a beautiful trail, easy, linear, 2-hour trail leading from Miradouro da Vista do Rei to Sete Cidades Village on the lagoon shores. Note that information regarding kayaking and canoeing the lagoon, and hiking the area’s trails is available at the Sete Cidades Village on the western shore of the lagoon.
