• Ponta Delgada

A seaside town, the capital and largest town in the island of Sao Miguel and the seat of the Regional Government of the Azores. Given the small size of the island the town is frequently used as the home base for traveling the island.
TheTjoy.com recommends spending few hours visiting the old town.

  • Start at the 18th century city gates, Portas da Cidade.
  • Visit the nearby Praca da Republica.
  • The beautifully decorated 16 th century Church of Sao Sebastiao.
  • The eclectic Carlos Machado Museum within the beautiful former Convent of Santo Andre.
  • On the seafront visit the 16th century Forte de Sao Bras Castle and the nearby and beautiful Church of Sao Jose.
  • To relax visit the tranquil and interesting Antonio Borges Botanical Graden, or the nearby Jose do Canto Botanical Garden.
  • Three km northwest of the town center consider exploring, either in a short or longer tour, the Gruta do Carvo Cave, an impressive 2 km Volcanic Lava Tube.

Spend half a day in town and continue to explore the natural wonders of the island.
