• Monserrate Palace

Palacio de Monserrate is a private villa located 4 km from Sintra’s center in the foothills overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The palace was built in the 2nd half of the 19th century on the ruins of a Neo-Gothic mansion built a century earlier, and is one of the best examples of Portuguese Romanticism architecture together with the Pena Palace. The mansion’s architecture and decorations are influenced by Romanticism, Medieval, and Moorish styles with Neo-Gothic elements.
While visiting the villa admire the eclectic combination of the various styles, including the Sacred Art Room, home to an interesting religious artworks collection, and the Main Hall with the central atrium and fountain and the beautifully decorated walls.
More in the villa, foliage motifs that decorate the walls a reference to the Gothic period, the Gallery with the Moorish arches between the columns, and the library with its Neo-Renaissance decorations.
But its the villa’s park that makes the Monserrate Palace so beautiful and unique.
The park is designed in a romantic style with a lake, springs, waterfalls, fountains, and grottoes, all within Botanical Gardens, one of the most important in Portugal. In the garden numerous rare and exotic trees and plants from all over the world arranged geographically along trails and among various stone features.
