  • Sintra is built on green hills at the foot of the Sintra mountains part of the Sintra-Cascais Nature Park, 33 km north of Lisbon. The town which was the summer resort for the Portuguese royal families, is famous for its magnificent royal palaces and villas, its beautiful gardens and parks, and the beautiful nearby beaches.This highly popular tourist destination offers mainly an opportunity to visit and admire magnificent 16th-19th centuries palaces and villas built on the green hills part of town.     • The must-see National Palace of Pena the crown jewel of Sintra palaces
    • The hilltop Castle of the Moors offering magnificent landscapes.
    • The enchanting and mysterious Quinta da Regaleira
    • The neoclassical Seteais Palace, currently an hotel, offering magnificent architecture and decorations, and great landscapes from its gardens.
    • 2 km west of the center visit the beautiful Monserrate Palace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with its magnificent surrounding park and botanical gardens, considered one of the most important in Portugal.
    • Within the town historic center visit the Sintra National Palace, especially if you do not plan to visit the National Palace of Pena, for its interior collection of Mudejar coloured tiles panelling, Azulejos, considered the most important in the world.
    • On the way from Lisbon to Sintra consider visiting the magnificently decorated and restored 18th-century Rococo Queluz Palace, 16 km southeast of Sintra town center, which somehow reminds the French Versailles palace.

     

    Near Sintra, 11-17 km west of the historic town, enjoy some of the best beaches in the Lisbon area

    Access Sintra from Lisbon using a public bus, a train, or driving a beautiful, forested road heading west.
