• Alfama District

The district was the heart of Moorish Lisbon, one of Europe’s oldest neighbourhoods originally settled in the Iron Age. Alfama is spread on a hill between downtown and the waterfront, and St. George’s Castle and the neighbourhood of Graca on the top. Loose yourself in the picturesque, narrow cobblestone streets with the pastel coloured houses, enjoying the small local shops, authentic restaurants, traditional Fado bars, and the river views down below.
Walk the hilly streets or take Tram #28 that runs through the district which is 15 minutes up hill from downtown Lisbon.
Visit the popular attractions of St. Gorge Castle, Lisbon Cathedral and Sao Vicente de Fora Monastery with its extensive collection of baroque decorative tiles and highly decorated cloisters. Other attractions to visit in Alfama are the Decorative Arts Museum, the Fado Museum where you can listen to the music and learn about the history of Fado, and the Feira da Ladra Flea Market. Enjoy the beautiful views of the district from the Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia Viewpoints.
