• The Lasithi Plateau

A 840 meters high plateau in the Lasithi region in eastern Crete, 11 km by 6 km area, 70 km east of Heraklion, and 40 km west of Agios Nikolaos. The plateau is famous for its white sails windmills used to pump water for irrigation since the 15th century Venetian period. The fertile soil of the plateau has attracted villagers since the 6000 BC Neolithic period, followed by the Minoans and Dorians to these days.
The fertile region between the mountains and the sea is dotted with small authentic villages surrounded by Potato fields, Apple, Pear, and Almond groves. There are several caves of archaeological interest in the plateau and surrounding mountains, where the most famous is The Diktaion Cave (Psychro Cave) in the Dikti mountains near the village of Psychro.
To visit the beautiful Lasithi Plateau rural area we would suggest driving a circular ~25 km long road around the Plateau. Starting at Mesa Lasithi, continue through the charming villages of Tzermiado, Agios Giorgios and the Cretan Folk Museum, Pcychro and the Diktaion Cave, and Kera village where you will see the Stone Windmills. Close to the windmills visit the interesting Homo Sapience Museum with displays related to the history of Crete and the mankind.
