• The Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai

The museum collection includes the artifacts found within the royal tombs of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia, in Vergina 75 km west of Thessaloniki.

Aigai was the first capital and the sacred city of the Macedonian Kingdom since the 4th century BC. The museum is considered one of the best archaeological museums in Greece, and it is based on the necropolis dated from the Iron Age period through to the Hellenistic era.

The Vergina archaeological site, which is still excavated, includes also the city’s acropolis, an Amphitheatre, temples, and a monumental royal palace, considered together with the Athens Parthenon, the most significant buildings of classical Greece.

The exhibits in the museum include findings from the palace, the royal burial site of the Temenid dynasty, and the intact and completely preserved burial site of King Philip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the great. Also on display sculptures found in the city temples, and the restored upper floor and facade of king Philip’s Palace.
