A charming small town on the Ammer River, in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, Germany, part of the German Alpine Road. With the impressive Bavarian Alps towering above town, it is highly recommended for a visit, enjoying the woodcarvings traditions and skills of its residents.
Admire the beautifully painted facades of the town houses with Biblical, fairytale and other scenes, the fantastic frescoes, and the decorations and statues in the Parish Church St. Peter and Paul.
But Oberammergau is most famous for the once in ten years performance of the Passion of Jesus Play. A 400 years’ tradition, performed by 2,000 artists, musicians, and other residence of the town, attracts more than 500,000 people from all over the world attending the Passion Plays in town.
Stroll the streets of the small town to enjoy the numerous woodcarver shops presenting religious, toys and other beautiful items. Explore the beautifully painted facades of the Forsthaus, Mußldomahaus and the Pilatushaus buildings home to very interesting woodcarving, pottery and stain glass workshops. Take the Kolben Chair Lift to the Kolbensattel, and the Laber cable car to the peak of the Laber mountain for overwhelming landscapes, hiking and skiing trails.
The town’s natural surroundings offers numerous outdoor activities opportunities including hiking and biking routes, mountain climbing, paragliding, and an Alpine Coaster. In the winter enjoy skiing, cross-country skiing, snow hiking, and snowboarding. When in Oberammergau, be sure to visit the beautiful Ettal Abbey and the Ludwig II Linderhof Palace.
