• Schöntal Abbey

Kloster Schöntal is a former 12th century Cistercian Abbey in the town of Schöntal on the banks of the Jagst River, 31 km southwest of Bad Mergentheim. Today the beautiful Baroque architecture is used by the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart as a retreat and training center. The Schöntal monastery combines the old and new abbeys with a beautiful garden.
In your visit you will be impressed by the Baroque monastery church with the double-towered facade, the rich decorations, paintings and sculptures, and the high altar with the depiction of the Assumption of Mary.
Explore the grand Rococo staircase and the magnificent banquet hall in the new abbey, the order hall with more than 300 paintings of monks and nuns in their traditional clothing, and the 17th century Old Abbey’s large dining hall home to the monastery’s history exhibition.
