• Studlagil Canyon

A magnificent and unique canyon in the Jokuldalu Glacier Valley in which the Jokulsa River with its blue-green waters flows within hexagonal basalt columns forming the canyon walls. The canyon’s basalt columns are of the same type as those at the famous Reynisfjara black beach near Vik, but their number and impact are much higher.
Note that accessing the canyon from the viewpoint is not possible, but there are plenty of nice hiking trails around the canyon, including one that leads to the canyon itself from the Studlafoss Fall.
The beautiful 15 meters high Studlafoss Fall and the surrounding hexagonal basalt rock columns form a magnificent site which should not be missed once you visit the canyon. Hike an easy 2 km trail from the bridge on road 932, over the Jokla River near the Klaustursel Farm, to reach the waterfall, and afterwards to continue to the Studlagil Canyon itself.
The Stdolagil Canyon and Studlafoss Fall are a hidden gem currently off the bitten track. Access both attractions on the gravel Road 932 off the Ring Road following Skjoldolfsstadir, 72 km west of Egilsstaoir on the way to Myvatn Lake.
Its a 3 hours detour off the Ring Road visiting these magnificent nature gems.
