• Hohensalzburg Fortress

Festung Hohensalzburg is a large 11th century medieval fortress overlooking the city of Salzburg, Austria, built for the residence of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg, and considered one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. In the picturesque fortress which was rebuilt and renovated it the 16th century, visit the Prince-Bishop’s apartments, small museums, and the courtyard with the 16th century small Chapel of St. George.
Admire the famous Salzburg Bull, Salzburger Stier, a huge mechanical organ renewed in the 18th century and still playing today, and visit the beautifully decorated private rooms, and the state rooms used for hosting and entertaining the fortress guests. In the fortress museum explore the weapons and torture devices, and the Salzburg household regiment artifacts in the Rainer Regiment Museum.
To reach the fortress, walk uphill for 20 minutes from the old town center, or take the funicular, Festungsbahn, from Festungsgasse. While in the Fortress enjoy the beautiful scenery of Salzburg and the surrounding countryside.
