• Goreme open air Museum

A must visit site 500 meters east of Goreme. Open daily, this is the largest monastic complex in the region with fairy chimneys, cave houses and more than 20 churches, some decorated with beautiful frescoes, cut out of the cliffs and crags, and connected by stairs, paths, and tunnels.
Many of these small churches have arches, pillars, vaults, and domes, lacking only windows when compared to ordinary churches.
Among the many churches visit the large Okalı Kilise (the Church of the Buckle), with the 9th and 11th centuries frescoes, the 11th century Elmalı Kilise (Apple Church) with  paintings depict scenes of the saints, bishops, and martyrs, and the Last Supper with the symbolic fish. Make sure to visit the Karanlık Kilise (the Dark Church), an 11th century monastic compound, used as a pigeon house until 1950, decorated with frescoes of New Testament scenes and considered the best preserved in Cappadocia.
