• York City Walls

Roman and Medieval 4 km long circular walls surrounding the city center. The walls with their gates, towers and bridges are the most complete in England and are highly popular for leisure strolls among York’s people. The most significant of the Roman remains is the 3rd century Tower in the Museum Gardens, but most of the wall dates from the 12th to the 14th century, with a few small areas which were restored in the Victorian period.

Part of the walls are the four main gateways into the old city which stand at Bootham Bar, Monk Bar, Walmgate Bar, and Micklegate Bar. The Micklegate Bar is home to the Henry VII Experience, a fascinating museum dedicated to the history of the Bar and the links between Henry VII and the city of York. Monk Bar is the most elaborate of the city gates, home to the Richard III Museum, where visitors can attend a modern “trial” of Shakespeare’s villain.
