The second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the Macedonia region, located on the Thermaikos Gulf, at the northwest corner of the Aegean Sea. Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC, it was an important metropolis in the Roman period, the second largest and wealthiest city of the Byzantine Empire, and an important seaport and multi-ethnic metropolis under the Turkish rule.

  • The Heptapyrgion, a Byzantine and Ottoman-era fortress on the northeastern corner of the Acropolis of Thessaloniki, offering panoramic views of the city, the Thermaic Gulf, and Mount Olympus in the distance. The fortress is located in the Ano Poli, the old town district, with its small stone paved streets, old squares and old Greek and Ottoman architecture houses.
  • Visit the Ladadika historic district near the Port of Thessaloniki, the entertainment district of the city, with its bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and pubs, and Aristotelous Square, one of the most famous places in Greece, with its numerous cafes and bars.
  • Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the Modiano Market, the city’s enclosed market, with its food produce shops, tavernas and bars, or the nearby Timiski Street the city’s main shopping street.
  • Enjoy the Arch of Galerius and the Church of the Rotunda, two adjacent 4th century monuments, and the 15th century White Tower monument and museum, the symbol of the city on the beautiful waterfront promenade with its coffee shops and gardens.
  • Thessaloniki has museums including the Thessaloniki State Museum of Modern Art, with its major collection based on the famous Costakis Collection of Russian avantgarde artists, including paintings, sculptures, drawings and more, and the Archaeological Museum of Thessalonik, with its collection of Thessaloniki and Macedonia artifacts dated to the Prehistoric, through to the Roman periods.
  • Families with children will enjoy the Waterland Water Park, in Tagarades 18 km south of the city center, with its pools, slides, games and other numerous attractions.

The city is a major transportation hub for Greece and southeastern Europe through its Port, and a major entry point to Greece through its airport.
