The Portuguese Azores archipelago which includes 9 islands is located 1,643 km west off the west coast of Portugal, with Sao Miguel Island being the largest, most populous, and most popular by far upon travelers from Europe and the US.
It is highly recommended by TheTjoy.com for a first visit, to concentrate in traveling Sao Miguel and if time allows to add a visit of 1-3 days to one or two islands such as Pico and Faial Islands.
Note that the Azores Archipelago, due to its volcanic nature, does not have great golden sand beaches and beach resorts, nor developed nightlife, as frequently imagined.
The relatively small Sao Miguel, 65X13 km, which was first settled by Portuguese colonists in the 15th century, is known as “The Green Island”, with its capital Ponta Delgada serving also as the capital of the archipelago. The island is highly accessible by direct flights from major cities in the US and Europe, or indirectly through Lisbon, Portugal. The islands small size enables quick access to all its attractions using one travel base, usually Ponta Delgada and its surroundings.
Sao Miguel is for nature lovers!
Traveling the island, you will enjoy volcanic massifs separated by a central low-lying ridge and rolling hills with remarkable geodiversity.
You will admire and enjoy Volcanoes, calderas, magnificent crater lakes, thermal hot springs and fumaroles, lush green valleys and forests, waterfalls, rivers and streams, and above all breathtaking land, coast and sea scenery.
The Atlantic Ocean surrounding the island is rich with marine life and especially with numerous species of Dolphins and whales to be watched and admire while boat cruising the surrounding ocean. For sunbathing, swimming, and surfing there are a few nice black sand beaches on the island’s coastline.
